Developing competency of pediatric junior resident in kangaroo mother care through structured module

KMC is skin to skin contact between mother and babies for maintaining of temperature of babies, effective breastfeeding, decrease neonatal infection, bonding and early discharge from hospital. The knowledge, skills, attitude and communication with the mother regarding KMC are lacking among resident due to paucity of literature and also they never undergo formal or structured training during residency. Hence this study was carried out to find out the current level of competency (pre-test) in PGs for KMC, to provide structured skill counseling training of post graduate students for mother of KMC Newborn unit of department of Pediatrics and to check whether structured counseling of mothers for KMC is better than the conventional mother care.

Effective 30 residents of Pediatric have participated in this study after clearance from institutional committee of JNMCH AMU Aligarh. They were subjected to 30 MCQ based on knowledge, skill and attitude and skill assessment prior to KMC module reading , interactive lecture, role play, and tabulated the result. The KMC module was sent to residents on email after 24 hours of pretest and structured skill was provided by role play, Video. The post test was conducted after 48 hours of structured training on KMC. Their knowledge enhancement was increased to 18% while skill and handling enhancement was found to be 18% in knowledge and 65% in skills. Hence it was concluded that the knowledge and skills regarding KMC has been increased after training to residents after structured module and skill training
